Steinernema carpocapsae

Steinernema carpocapsae is a microscopic, non-segmented worm (nematode) that parasitize on various larvae, for example several soil insects, Duponchelia moth, crane fly and buxus moth.  

Life cycle and relative effectiveness 

Nematodes like Steinernema carpocapsae enter the host through body openings or by penetration of the body wall. Once inside, they release a bacterium, which kills the host within 24 hours. The nematode continues to reproduce itself, and its offspring searches for new host material. Parasitized insects will become yellow / (pale) brown and turns slimy. This makes it hard to observe them. 

Application and dose 

Steinernema carpocapsae is most effective when the ground is moist, with a temperature between 13ºC en 25ºC. During low infections, a dosage of 500.000 nematodes per square meter is advised. Keep the soil wet for two weeks after administering for an optimal result. 

1) Dissolve the total amount (one package) in a bucket of five litre. Make sure the bucket is filled with water (15ºC – 20ºC), then stir firmly and let the mixture soak for about five minutes. 

2) After 20 - 30 seconds replace to mixture to a second bucket leaving the carrier material in the first bucket. The content is now ready for usage and can be transferred into the spraying drum. Add additional water until the required content is reached. Spray at once in the following method: 

3) Spraying is possible by dorsal sprayer or sprinkler system. The minimal spray opening is ½ mm, (500 micron) preferably with a ‘brush head’. Al strainers must be discarded to prevent blockage. Administer at a pressure of maximal five bar. When spraying stir constantly, otherwise the nematodes will sink to the bottom. 

Storage and handling 

Steinernema carpocapsae supplied in a box, containing 50 or 500 million larvae. Maximum storage time of six weeks, in darkness, at a temperature between 2°C – 6°C.
